This novel picks up where Valiant Volunteers left off in April 1917 shortly after the United States enters the war. The fictionalized saga recounts the confusion and chaos the Americans flying with the French experienced as the US Army began to assimilate them.

It takes the Lafayette Escadrille through its transition to the US Air Service 103rd Squadron. It follows the characters and real members of the escadrille through the end of the war.
